Anniversary, Dino and a drum cake?

As I'm awaiting my class to begin I keep trying new things. This week I managed to bake four cakes and tried some new techniques while improving on what I know. Believe it or not there is a lot of information out there that is available along with people who are more than willing to share tips with us. "Ideas are free" some one told me, and well you take those ideas and evolve them to make your own design.

I started this week with an anniversary cake for my sister and her husband of three years. I wanted to make them a simple yet romantic cake. Along with the white fondant base color, I chose jade green for their three year celebration and tried to get as close to the color as I could. I added white and green flowers and a green and white rope out of fondant for accents. My sister and hubby  loved the cake so it really made it worth while.

Also, I chose to surprise them with a his and hers joint heart shaped cake. I added a few his and hers accents that made the cake that much special and gave it that "awww" effect.

The Dino cake was a fun project. I had no idea how or where to begin because most of the online information was not tutorial but more of images of work completed. I knew I was going to sculpt the dino out of rice crispies but I dont have experience in sculping anything so I did my best based on what I had seen and what I thought the dino would look like.

The person provided me with a napkin from the birthday party and that helped me achieve the color and keep it some what in the theme.

The Drum cake idea came from my other sister who wanted a Fresh Beat Band themed party. Her son loves to play the drums and he does it well for a 3 year old and so I decided to making him one he could eat. I did my research and ended up at nickjr.com with the cutest drum cake. I did my best and here's what I came up with based on that idea.

Cake 101

Going to Class

Making cakes has been something that I have always liked to do but have not been that great at. It’s probably because I have never taken myself seriously…until now.

I am preparing myself by researching and practicing what I see others do however; I have also enrolled myself in a baking class at a local cake and supply store. I'm looking forward to learning new skills so that I may document and share in a way others can learn as well.

So far I have tried to work with basic vanilla recipe's that I have found on-line but I haven't found one that really works for me so I have been baking out of a box while focusing on decorating my cakes. For decorating, I have been using vanilla butter cream and marshmallow fondant.

Here's what I have accomplished so far...

I don't have any formal training as of yet but I have a great imagination and I'm determined to learn, grow and share as I go along. I'm looking forward to learning some basic skills that I skipped out on to begin working with the fondant.

Although I will be starting from square one I know I will be establishing a good foundation for all my future cakes.
